Which tubing is suitable for your gas or liquid system?
When choosing the type and size of tubing, it is important to consider:
- surface finish
- material
- hardness
- wall thickness
These four factors alone can result in thousands of possible combinations. To help you find the right tubing for your application, Swagelok provides the video below along with detailed tubing datasheets. Datasheets are available for more than a dozen materials, including carbon steel, copper, aluminum, and a wide range of alloys.
Which tubing size is suitable for high-pressure systems?
The choice of tubing size depends on factors such as pressure, temperature, medium, and the desired flow rate.
What should you consider when evaluating tubing quality?
Tubing quality can vary significantly.
- check whether the tubing is seamless or welded
- check the hardness of the tubing
- make sure the surface is free from scratches and other defects
- check that the tubing is round and not oval
- check the outside diameter (OD) and inside diameter (ID), and make sure they are free from burrs
- make sure the wall thickness is sufficient for the pressure the system will be subjected to
- check that the wall thickness is uniform around the entire tube
Tips for those who want to bend tubing themselves
When installing fittings near a bend, make sure to leave enough straight tubing so that the tubing can be properly inserted into the fitting. How much straight length is required? The tubing datasheet includes a practical diagram to help you determine this.
